Fabric Terminology
Single / Double Ply
Shirt fabrics are either Single ply or Double ply, also known as Two-ply. Single Ply is created from a number of yarns twisted together to make a single thread.
Two-ply fabrics are superior compared to single-ply fabrics. They have a smooth, crisp feel and are luxurious to wear. Single-ply fabrics are equally luxurious when a higher count of single ply fabric with compact construction are weaved. 2 in a 100/2's or the 1 in the 70/1 refer to the ply of fabric.
Fabric Count
Fabric count is expressed in the number of threads per unit length which indicate the fabric quality in general. Higher thread count results in stronger, durable, and luxurious fabric with less possibility of yarn shifting.
However, thread count determines the compactness and density of the woven fabric and is important in defining the fabric quality. 100 in a 100/2's or the 70 in the 70/1 indicate to the count of the fabric.
Fabric Composition
Weaving a fabric may include a variety of materials. Cotton and Linen are widely used to weave a fabric. Popular among the elite, 100% Egyptian Cotton, well-known for long staples and excellent quality, is a preferred shirt fabric.
For that added stretch, a blend of Lycra and Cotton is commonly used for stitching slim fit shirts. Strong and durable, 100% Linen is ideal for warmer climates.
